It was over 20 years ago that we attended our first convention. My mind was blown. The costumes (real live stormtroopers!), vendors of geeky things, fan made items, people selling obscure movies or TV series never released “officially”, costume contest, celebrity guests, authors and artists, and…. no way, a working R2D2?!!!
From that point on, we were hooked. A new world had been opened up. These were places where geeks could hang out, talk about, and even participate in the fandoms we loved.
Now over two decades later and my business is within the “geek sphere”, I have shiny white armor, and I only need to go downstairs to greet my R2-D2. We’ve attended close to a hundred events, vended at dozens of conventions of all types, participated in costume contests (before “cosplay” was a widely used term), and even worked as volunteers at a few.
Over time things have changed quite a bit in the convention scene. There are many large ones that are very “corporate” and many smaller shows not much more than “vendor-cons”. What we want to capture with Fellowship of Fandom is the feeling we had attending a convention for the first time. A place where you can make an obscure sci fi movie reference and people “get it”. Where you can discover a new indy comic, or hopefully where you could even make a new friend or two. Come join us!
